Parents Cited in 4-Year Old Gunshot Victim Case

On 110709 at approximately 1500 hours, the Medford Police Department, Medford Fire Department and Mercy Flights Ambulance Service responded to the report of a 4-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the foot in the 2700 Blk. Merriman Road.

 

Upon arrival, emergency responders found the child’s step-father applying direct pressure to the wound.  The child was treated by medics and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

 

A detective was called out to assist the patrol division in this investigation.

 

The preliminary investigation revealed the child was able to access a loaded .40 caliber handgun that was near his parent’s bed, where he was taking a nap.  The child suffered a gunshot wound to his ankle/foot area.

 

The investigation is continuing into the circumstances surrounding the child’s injury.

On 111009, Medford Police detectives cited/released both parents on charges of Reckless Endangering and Child Neglect II.  They are scheduled to appear in Jackson County Circuit Court on 120209 at 0900 hours.

In light of this situation, the Medford Police Department reminds parents to keep firearms unloaded and in a locked/secure location that children are unable to access.  Gun locks and safes are recommended.  The Medford Police Department has a number of free gun locks available to residents.  Those interested in obtaining the free gun locks can contact the Medford Police Department at 541-774-2268 (ask for CSO Pendleton).
