City of Medford Oregon / City News and EventsPurple Heart City Proclamation
At the Thursday, February 6, 2014, City Council meeting at noon, Mayor Gary Wheeler will be issuing a proclamation declaring the City of Medford as a “Purple Heart City”. Medford will be the first City in Southern Oregon and the second in the State to join in this movement honoring members of the United States Armed Services who have received a Purple Heart. Jim Berg, National Purple Heart Trail Coordinator and James Klug, National Public Relations Director will be in attendance to receive the proclamation.
The Purple Heart decoration was initially created as the “Badge of Military Merit” by General George Washington in 1782. The Purple Heart was made available to the common solder and is specifically awarded to any member of the United States Armed Services who have been wounded or killed in combat with a declared enemy of the United States.
The City of Medford will be installing signage at various locations within the City to identify the Purple Heart City designation.
