Artist Selected for Vogel Plaza Mural Project

Vogel Plaza Mural The Vogel Plaza Public Art Selection Committee has selected artist Yulia Avgustinovich to create a public art mural on the building wall along the east side of Vogel Plaza in downtown Medford.

The selection committee collectively reviewed 29 applications and is working on finalizing the project contract with the hopes to have the mural completed by June 30.

Members of the selection committee noted Yulia’s lengthy experience with painting public murals, previous work with multiple municipalities and the colorful detailed design of her proposal as reasons for selecting her.

“Yulia’s budget, timeline, public art mural experience and renderings of the completed mural were the most detailed of those received by the committee. It is clear that Yulia will be able to tackle this huge project in the short timeframe and with the small budget allotted,” said Simone Stewart, Co-Chair of the Art Selection Committee and Chair of the Medford Arts Commission.

The selection committee was comprised of members from the City’s Arts, Landmarks and Historic Preservation, and Multicultural Commissions, as well as City staff, representatives from the Pear Blossom Festival and Downtown Medford Association, and the building owner,

This project originated from the City’s first Employee Innovation Competition. City staff was encouraged to team up and develop innovative ideas that incorporate Council or approved Department Goals. Teams then presented their ideas in June 2018 and ultimately the team behind the Vogel Plaza Mural Project won.

The winning team (seen below), The PlaceMakers, consisted of Parks and Planning staff.

About the Design
Vogel Plaza Mural Design

"The mural is intended to celebrate the city of Medford, it's history, past and present, and the nature of southern Oregon. Blooming pear trees represent the close tie of the region with the orchard industry and the famous Medford Park Blossom Festival. The agricultural fields, orchards, and birds native to southern Oregon will acquaint visitors to the plaza with history and nature.

The mural's colors are bright and cheerful, but harmonious to fit in Vogel Plaza with its numerous green trees, flowers, and red brick pavement.

And of course, the main goal of this mural is to beautify the square, give it zest and make it a point of interest in the city of Medford."
