The State of Oregonís single-use retail bag restriction took effect on January 1, 2020 meaning retail stores and restaurants can no longer provide single-use checkout bags.
If you forget to bring a reusable bag, the new law requires that retail businesses and restaurants charge a five-cent fee for paper bags. Plastic bags used for produce, bulk foods and meat are exempt.
This change was approved by the 2019 Oregon Legislature, which passed the Sustainable Shopping Initiative in June 2019.
