New COVID-19 Temporary Homeless Campground Opens in Medford

COVID-19 Temporary Campground OpensA new COVID-19 temporary homeless campground opened on Monday, July 27 in Medford.

For the past four months, at the recommendation of Jackson County Public Health, the City of Medford and the Jackson County sheriff have allowed “camping in place” along the Bear Creek Greenway. As the county entered into Phase 2 of reopening and trash accumulation as well as fire danger increased along areas of the Greenway, the City and local community partners collaborated to develop a plan for a temporary campground.

Earlier this month the Medford City Council approved the land, located off Biddle Road, to be an urban campground for homeless individuals and families. The campground is operated by Rogue Retreat who will have staff on-site 24 hours a day. Amenities provided for the campers include food, shower, laundry, garbage, and handwashing and portable restrooms as well as case management services.

Participating local organizations include: Rogue Retreat, Addictions Recovery Center, OnTrack, St. Vincent de Paul of Medford, Jackson County Mental Health Services, Medford Gospel Mission, and La Clinica.

The campground has 25 sites which can hold more than one camper to accommodate families, if needed. The campground is following Center for Disease Control guidelines and proper social distancing measures are in place.

“This campground wouldn’t be possible without the thoughtful collaboration of our non-profit service providers and the County, and their willingness to help make this happen. Our City Council has been very supportive of this effort and we look forward to see what comes of it,” said Brian Sjothun, Medford City Manager.
