City accepting applications for boards and commissions appointments

Apply NowThe City of Medford is currently accepting applications to fill vacant seats on various boards and commissions including the Housing Advisory Commission and Water Commission through November 10.

City boards and commissions enable citizens to participate in local government by bringing diverse viewpoints to decision-making and advisory processes.

All applicants must meet residency requirements (meaning they live, own property, or own a business within city limits).

Available Positions:

Arts Commission:

  • Two full-term positions (term expires 01/31/2024) and one partial-term (expires 1/31/2022)
  • Commission advises City Council regarding arts promotion, encouragement of the arts and artistic performances to help foster broad participation in and an understanding of the arts and their value to the Medford community.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee

  • Two full-term positions (terms expire 1/31/2024), meets monthly.
  • Committee advises the Transportation Commission on plans and issues related to non-motorized transportation in the City.

Cemetery Commission

  • Two full-term positions (term expires 1/31/2024), meets monthly.
  • Commission makes recommendations to the City Manager and City Council regarding the funding and operation of Eastwood Cemetery. The Commission also works to secure donations and bequests for the Cemetery Trust Fund.

Community Development Grants Commission

  • Three full-term positions (terms expires 1/31/24) and two partial-term positions (terms expire 1/31/22 and 1/31/23), meets monthly.
  • The Commission acts as an advisor to the City Council on matters affecting housing development pertaining to the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program in the City of Medford.
  • One opening for each category: local business representative, healthcare representative, at-large member and two (2) members who live/have lived homelessness experience.

Hospital Facilities Authority Board (5-year term)

  • One full-term position (term expires 1/31/26, meets only when called, generally once per year.
  • The Board acts as a conduit which allows non-profit hospital facilities to float tax-free bonds.

Housing Advisory Commission

  • Four full-term positions (term expires 1/31/24), meets monthly.
  • The Commission acts as an advisor to the City Council on matters affecting housing development pertaining to the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program in the City of Medford.
  • One opening for each category: lending institution representative, realtor or multi-family housing operator, construction & development representative and affordable housing developer.

Landmarks & Historic Preservation Commission (4-year term)

  • One full-term position (term expires 1/31/25), meets monthly.
  • The Commission is the approving authority for Historic Plan reviews and exceptions or changes; investigates any building, structure or other physical object in the City, which is of historic significance; institutes and supports programs and projects that further the historic policy of the City of Medford.

Multicultural Commission

  • Three full-term positions (terms expire 1/31/24), meets monthly.
  • The Commission serves to represent and reflect issues of economic, social and cultural interest for Medford’s growing multicultural community. 

Parking Committee

  • Three partial-term positions are available (terms expire 1/31/21, 1/31/22, 1/31/23), meets monthly.
  • The committee advises the Transportation Commission on matters related to parking in the Central Business District.
  • One opening for each category: property or business owner, an employee of a business or a resident in the Central Business District and two at-large members.

Parks & Recreation Commission

  • Three full-term positions (terms expire 1/31/24), meets monthly.
  •  The Commission advises the Council on matters pertaining to the acquisition and development of public parks, recreation facilities, greenways and spaces.

Planning Commission

  • Two full-term positions (terms expire 1/31/25), meets twice monthly.
  • The Commission is the approving authority for zone changes, planned unit developments, conditional use permits, exceptions and land divisions, etc.; makes recommendations and suggestions to the City Council and other public authorities on matters relating to zoning, growth and development in the City of Medford. 

Site Plan & Architectural Committee 

  • Three full-term positions (term expires 1/31/24), meets twice monthly.
  • The commission is the approving authority for the Site Plan and Architectural Review, looking at architecture, landscaping, signage and any other improvements of new development projects and improvements to existing structures.
  • One position must be filled by a licensed engineer; two positions are at large. When selecting the at-large positions, preference is given to applicants with experience in engineering, architecture, landscaping and/or construction.

Transportation Commission

  • One full-term position (expires 1/31/34), meets monthly.
  • The Commission works with a number of committees to advise the City Council and the Planning Commission on all matters affecting transportation policy in the City and surrounding area.

Tree Committee

  • Three full-term positions (terms expire 1/31/24) and one partial-term (expires 1/31/23), meets monthly.
  • The Committee advises the Parks & Recreation Commission regarding trees in the right-of-way and in parklands.

Unified Appeal Board

  • Two partial-term positions (terms expire 1/31/22), meets only when called. 
  • Performs the function of those boards created by the Uniform Building Codes, the Plumbing Code, the Electrical Code, and the Mechanical Code. Members must have knowledge of the building field.
  • One opening for each category: business community member and at-large member.

Water Commission

  • One full-term position (term expires 1/31/25) and meets twice a month.
  • The Water Commission maintains, manages and operates the water system for the needs of the City.

Youth Member of the Cemetery Commission 

  • One partial-term position (term expires 6/30/21), meets at least quarterly.
  • The Commission makes recommendations to the Parks and Recreation Commission regarding the funding and operations of Eastwood Cemetery. The commission also works to secure donations and bequests for the Cemetery Trust Fund.
