The Public Works Operations section manages the Street Maintenance program, consisting of over two hundred miles of paved roadway and twenty-two miles of alleys. This program maintains pavement, curbs, gutters and roadside shoulders. Each year the City performs pavement maintenance by applying treatments such as asphalt overlays, crack sealant and slurry seals. These programs are designed to improve the structure of the roadway, but also extend the life of the pavement by preventing water from penetrating the surface.
The program is managed by utilizing a computer program by StanTec Inc. called “Pavement Management Applications.” This system allows the City to scientifically rate or evaluate each section of pavement and compare it against all the pavement sections in the city. This then allows for a computer model of the street network to predict pavement failure and the need for maintenance.
The Infrastructure Rehabilitation Team (IRT) performs repair and maintenance work for this program. This team is made up of 14 Public Works Technicians and one supervisor. They also perform all underground utility repairs and culvert installations.
