Medford Parks and Recreation Receives National Accreditation

CAPRA Certification Culminates Lengthy Process

Nearly three years of preparation was rewarded October 16, 2012, when

the Medford Parks and Recreation Department gained national accreditation from the

Commission for Accreditation of Parks and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA).

The City of Medford is only the second parks and recreation agency in Oregon and just the

125th in the country to earn the prestigious distinction.

CAPRA accreditation assures the general public, policy makers and taxpayers that MPRD

delivers a high level of quality and operates in accordance with industry standards of

excellence.

“This is a tremendous achievement for the City of Medford and an outstanding

accomplishment for the department,” Parks and Recreation Director Brian Sjothun said.

“Our community will greatly benefit from this time-consuming, comprehensive accreditation

process.”

CAPRA certification is valid for five years. In order to apply or re-apply for accreditation,

agencies must complete a comprehensive self-assessment covering 144 topics that

demonstrates compliance with CAPRA standards, which is analyzed by a panel of academic

and industry experts.

The benefits of going through the CAPRA certification process are:

· Formalization of operational procedures.

· Creation or discovery of operational efficiencies.

· Sharpening of the department’s focus on how to address community needs.

· Augmentation of funding solicitation and justification.

For parks and recreation employees, the CAPRA preparation and accreditation improves

staff training and education processes, establishes clear expectations and increases

awareness of the divisional and overall efforts.

“Our staff has been magnificent throughout the certification process,” Sjothun said. “We’ve

also received tremendous support and buy-in from the Parks and Recreation Commission,

the City Council and the City Manager.”

Medford joins Hillsboro as Oregon’s CAPRA-certified parks and recreation agencies.
