Bear Creek Greenway Maintenance and Safety Efforts

The City has a multi-department approach to address maintenance and safety along the Bear Creek Greenway.

Health and Safety Operations

Medford Police, along with Jackson County and a number of local agency representatives, perform monthly health and safety operations along the Bear Creek Greenway. The purpose of this monthly operation is to improve the safety, security, and cleanliness of the area. The operations are also used as a way to connect homeless individuals with social services.

On average, two tons of trash are removed from the targeted area and illegal camps are eradicated.

Vegetation Removal

Riparian restoration efforts continue along the Bear Creek Greenway as a result of the approval of special project funding during the 2017-19 biennial budget process. The Parks, Recreation and Facilities Management department has been partnering with Oregon Stewardship to accelerate the removal of non-native vegetation on City-owned property along the greenway. Removal efforts have recently been focused on removing blackberry brambles and replant native vegetation.

Trash Removal

Each week, a Parks and Recreation crew performs maintenance along the City-owned portion of the Bear Creek Greenway. This work includes clearing the trail and an abundance of trash removal.

Evaluation

City department representatives are consistently meeting with County and local agency representatives to evaluate what we are doing, how to leverage grant funding to assist in our efforts and identify what improvements we can make in the process.
