Type of Incident: Arson Arrest
Date of incident: May 3rd, 2017 at 2:52 a.m.
Location of incident: Evergreen parking garage, 34 W. 8th Street, Medford
On the listed date and time, officers and fire personnel responded to a fire alarm at the Evergreen parking structure. We found the elevator had been set on fire and appeared to have extinguished itself on its own, but not before causing severe damage to the interior of the elevator.
The parking garage is well covered by surveillance cameras which were reviewed. Officers learned that two suspects entered the parking garage shortly before the arson, both carrying skateboards and one carrying a mannequin head. One went into the elevator with the mannequin head
while the other tipped over a large metal trash can nearby. After a while, both males lit the mannequin head on fire which was on the floor of the elevator. They also threw other debris on the fire before leaving.
The video was high enough quality that the suspects could be identified. Before we could release the images to the public, one of our detectives spotted one of the suspects, Anthony Montez, at 10th and Oakdale. We identified the other suspect as Mikal Walton and arrested him at the Sunset Inn, where he currently resides.
Both were interviewed and lodged for Arson 1st Degree. The damage is estimated to be $1,000.
