On Friday, July 28, 2017, from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM, the Medford Police Department
In intersections not controlled by electronic traffic control devices, Oregon law requires
that a driver must stop and remain stopped if a pedestrian is walking in your lane of traffic
or the adjacent lane. If a pedestrian is crossing in a crosswalk at a traffic light, then you
must stop if the pedestrian is within your lane or six feet of the adjacent lane. Oregon law
also prohibits passing a stopped vehicle at a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an
intersection, if the vehicle is stopped to permit a pedestrian to cross the roadway.
Violations of these laws carry a base fine of $260.
During this operation, the following enforcement action was taken:
· Failure to Stop and Remain Stopped for a Pedestrian in a Crosswalk: 8 citations
· Failure to use Seatbelt: 2 citations
· Driving While Suspended: 1 citation
· Operating a Cell Phone: 4 citations
· Violation of the Posted Speed Limit: 8 citations
· Various other traffic violations: 5 warnings
For further information regarding the Targeted Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Operation,
contact Sergeant Don Lane, Medford Police Department Special Services Section at 541-
conducted a “Targeted Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Operation” at an unmarked
crosswalk located at Cherry Ln. and Crystal Springs Dr. The three hour operation focused
on drivers failing to yield the right of way to pedestrians in the crosswalk. Awareness is
raised through education on pedestrian right of way laws and use of a decoy pedestrian
operation within the city.
Using funding and guidelines from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), the
Medford Police Department is striving to raise awareness through education and
enforcement of pedestrian right of way laws.
