Type of Incident: Homicide Investigation (MPD Case 17-23199)

Date of incident: October 2, 2017

Location of incident: 500 Block Benson Street, Medford

On 10/2/17 at 6:42AM, officers were dispatched to a residence in the 500 block of Benson Street for a welfare check. When officers arrived there was evidence that a disturbance had taken place. The involved parties were not located at the residence and the resident’s vehicle was missing.

At 9:52AM a Medford officer located the missing vehicle parked abandoned in the 100 block of Mariposa Terrace, Medford. At 10:51AM three people believed to be involved with this incident were detained walking on Barnett Road near Black Oak Drive.

The investigation led detectives to the 9100 block of East Antelope Road where they have recovered a body of an adult male. The manner and cause of death is pending, however detectives believe this is a homicide.

The Medford Police Department is being assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police Crime Lab, and the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office.

This investigation is ongoing at this time; additional information will be released as it becomes available.

UPDATED INFORMATION: (October 3, 2017)
Detectives with the Medford Police Department continued their investigation into the above-mentioned homicide throughout last night. The victim has subsequently been identified as 50 year old Aaron Friar, who lived at the residence where this incident took place. Friar’s body
was recovered yesterday afternoon after it was located dumped over a dirt embankment in the 9100 block of East Antelope Road.

Detectives believe Gavin MacFarlane (19), Russell Jones (22), and Ellen Friar (15), conspired to kill Mr. Friar and dispose of his body. Detectives believe Mr. Friar was assaulted and killed with a weapon while he was sleeping. Detectives believe the three suspects then stole the victim’s vehicle, along with additional property from the residence. The suspect’s used the victim’s vehicle to transport the victim’s body to the location on East Antelope Road. The victim’s vehicle has been located and is in the custody of the Medford Police Department.

The investigation showed that Gavin McFarlane (19 years old) was involved in a sexual relationship with Ellen Friar (15 years old.) Detectives believe this relationship caused tension between victim and his daughter, Ellen, and her boyfriend Gavin.

This investigation is still ongoing. Medford Police Detectives executed a search warrant last night at a residence on Almond Street in Medford. An autopsy is pending to assist in determining the cause and manner of death. The Medford Police Department has been assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police Crime Lab, and the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office.

Gavin McFarlane was lodged at the Jackson County Jail for one count of Murder, one count of First Degree Robbery, one count of Tampering with Evidence, and one count of Third Degree Rape.
Russell Jones was lodged at the Jackson County Jail for one count of Murder, one count of First Degree Robbery, and one count of Tampering with Evidence.

Ellen Friar was lodged at the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Facility for one count of Murder, one count of First Degree Robbery, and one count of Tampering with Evidence.

UPDATED INFORMATION: (October 4, 2017)
On 10/3/17 at 10:30AM Deputy State Medical Examiner Dr. James Olson performed an autopsy on the victim, 50 year old Aaron Friar, as part of this investigation. Dr. Olson concluded the cause of death was the result of blunt head trauma and the manner of death is homicide.

This investigation will remain ongoing. At this time any further inquiries regarding this investigation will need to be done through the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office.
