City HallThe Medford Mayor and City Council are looking for community members to volunteer on City Boards, Commissions, and Committees. Below is a list of available volunteer positions.

Our community is growing and this is an excellent opportunity to add your voice to those who govern our city. Please consider joining a group of dedicated volunteers who can help our city, be the best it can be!

Eligibility
For most boards, commissions, and committees, applicants must be:
  • a resident of the city
  • 18 years or older

Application Process

Application forms are available in the City Manager’s Office, Room 310, City Hall and will be accepted until October 31, 2018.
 

Appointments to city boards and commissions are made either by the Mayor or the City Council, or both, as in the case of the Budget Committee and the Water Commission. Terms on the various boards and commissions expire on January 31 of each year, and in November the city starts recruiting applicants for upcoming vacancies.

ARTS COMMISSION (3-year term):   Three full-term positions (terms expire 01/31/2022). Meets monthly on matters pertaining to the selection, acquisition, restoration and preventive maintenance of public art.  Also advises the City Council regarding arts promotion, encouragement of the arts, and artistic performances to help foster broad participation in and an understanding of the arts and their value to the Medford community.
 
BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN ADVISORY COMMITTEE (3-year term):  Two full‑term positions (terms expire 01/31/2022) and two partial-term positions (terms expire 01/31/2021).   Meets once a month.  The Committee advises the City Council on plans and issues related to non-motorized transportation in the City of Medford.  Applicants are sought to represent pedestrian interests, cycling interests and other non-motorized transportation modes.

CEMETERY COMMISSION (3-year term):   Two full-term positions (terms expire 01/31/2022) and one partial-term position (term expires 01/31/2021).  Meets monthly. Commission makes recommendations to the City Manager and City Council regarding the funding and operation of Eastwood Cemetery.  The Commission also works to secure donations and bequests for the Cemetery Trust Fund.
 
CITY BUDGET COMMITTEE (4-year term):  Two full-term positions (terms expire 01/31/2023) and one partial-term position (term expires 01/31/2021).  Meets primarily in the spring to review the City’s budget document prior to forwarding its recommendation to the City Council. 
 
HOSPITAL FACILITIES BOARD (5-year term):  One full-term position (term expires 01/31/2024).  Meets only when called, generally once per year.  The Board acts as a conduit that allows nonprofit hospital facilities to float tax-free bonds.
 
LANDMARKS AND HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION (4-year term): Two full-term positions (terms ending 01/31/2023). Meets monthly. The Commission is the approving authority for Historic Plan reviews and exceptions or changes; investigates any building, structure, or other physical object in the City which is of historic significance; institutes and supports programs and projects that further the historic policy of the City.
 
MULTICULTURAL COMMISSION (3-year term): Two full-term positions (terms expire 01/31/2022) and one partial-term position (term expires 01/31/2020).   Meets monthly.  The Multicultural Commission serves to represent and reflect issues of economic, social and cultural interest for Medford’s growing multicultural community. 
 
PARKING COMMISSION (3-year term):  Two full-term positions (terms expire 01/31/2022).  Meets monthly.  The Commission advises the City Council on matters related to parking in the Central Business District.
One position must be filled by a person who is a business owner or employee of a downtown business. 
 
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION (3-year term):  Three full-term positions (terms expire 01/31/2022).  Meets monthly. The Commission advises the Council on matters pertaining to the acquisition and development of public parks, recreation facilities, greenways, and spaces.
 
PLANNING COMMISSION (4-year term): Three full-term positions (terms expire 01/31/2023). Meets twice monthly. The Commission is the approving authority for zone changes, planned unit developments, conditional use permits, exceptions, and land divisions, etc.; makes recommendations and suggestions to the City Council and other public authorities on matters relating to zoning, growth and development in the City.
 
POLICE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (2-year term): Four full-term positions (terms expire 01/31/2021).  Meets quarterly.   One opening for each category:  resident citizen of Ward 2, resident citizen of Ward 4, a member representing the business community and a representative from a minority. The Police Advisory Committee assists the Police Department in exploring solutions to community issues and to serve as a forum for community members to seek redress for unresolved Police complaints.
 
SITE PLAN & ARCHITECTURAL COMMISSION (4-year term):
  Two full-term positions (terms expire 01/31/2023).  Meets twice monthly.  The Commission is the approving authority for Site Plan and Architectural Review looking at architecture, landscaping, signage and any other improvements of new development projects and improvements to existing structures.  When selecting the At Large positions, preference is given to applicants with experience in engineering, architecture, landscaping, and/or construction. To qualify for these positions, applicants must be a licensed architect or a licensed landscaping professional.
 
TREE COMMITTEE (3-year term):  Three full-term positions (terms expire 01/31/2022).  Meets monthly. The Tree Committee is a Sub-Committee of the Parks and Recreation Commission.  It advises the Commission on matters regarding trees in the right-of-ways and in parklands.
 
URBAN RENEWAL AGENCY BUDGET COMMITTEE (3-year terms):  Two full‑term positions (terms expire 01/31/2022) and one partial-term position (term expires 01/31/2020).  Generally meets one time in odd years to review Medford Urban Renewal Agency’s budget document prior to forwarding its recommendation to the Board of Directors. 
 
WATER COMMISSION (5-year term):  One full-term position (term expires 01/31/2024). Meets twice monthly.  The Water Commission maintains, manages and operates the water system for the needs of the City.
