The Medford Police Department’s 8 part-time Community Service Officers are supervised within the Special Services Section and perform many tasks. They are non-sworn, part-time, uniformed employees assigned to the Patrol Division and are responsible for supporting overall patrol activities. This can range from assisting with traffic control at motor vehicle collisions to performing security at some crime scenes and many other special details that may be required. CSO’s are also responsible for enforcing non-criminal violations within the city and in particular, the parks and downtown area.
In addition, Part-time CSO’s are assigned to the Medford Opportunity High School to assist the school staff in security of the school grounds. The CSO’s work closely with the students and staff to solve problems and enhance security to school, thus providing a safe learning environment for students.
Part-time CSO’s perform bike patrol within the city parks and bike paths in the spring and summer months as well. This helps add to the overall security to the parks and greenway for the community to enjoy.
Many individuals in the part-time CSO unit strive to become full time police officers. The Medford Police Department has hired a number of individuals from this unit to join the ranks of sworn officers.
